Years ago, I was spending quality time with some close friends, catching up and slowing down.
A husband and wife began sharing the story of their family, and the journey that brought them to where they were that day.
Their story struck me in a way that inspired a poem, as most things do for me.
I went home, and put pen to paper, knowing it was meant to be shared with them, but not thinking much about it having any particular impact.
Upon completion, I picked up the phone and gave them a ring…a simple “hey, your story resonated with me, and I’ve written a little poem that I’d like to read for you.”.
Unaware that I was on speaker phone in front of their entire immediate family;
I recited the poem through, and all I heard was silence. Thinking they may be confused, or we had lost the connection, my friend finally said in a fragile voice, “I’m so sorry, we’re going to have to give you a call back…because we are all in tears.”.
The amount of thanks returned was enough to last a lifetime.
This is the experience that truly woke me up to the power of poetry, and the significance it has in hilighting life’s stories, by ways some never thought to put on such a pedestal.
I began writing with more purpose, writing for friends, and receiving the same reactions each time over the years. It truly gave my poetry a new life.
I analyzed the wedding poems available as options for ceremonies, and couldn’t help but notice that they were mostly…generic. Some lacking in emotion, some too ‘cheesy’ to be applied in such an elegant, momentous occasion as a wedding day.
So, I decided to begin writing bespoke poetry as a regular practice to share with others.
